Cab driver Paolo (Marcello Mastroianni) drives two young men, who are accompanied by the attractive Lina (Sophia Loren), to the beach of Ostia. Lina persuades him to go swimming with her. Warned by the alarm, he is just able to prevent the two men from stealing his cab. When Paolo tries to inform Lina's father (Vittorio De Sica) of his daughter's bad behavior, he has no idea of the criminal energy of the charming Stroppiani family. "That was the birth of the Sophia Loren/Marcello Mastroianni couple. We made 12 films together, spent a lifetime in front of the camera." (Marcello Mastroianni). Their first encounter marked a breakthrough for them both. (hjf)
